Bev McKenna & Marion McIlvenna have launched a charity drive within the ladies’ section to raise funds for this year’s Santa Shoebox project. For those of you who don’t know about it, the project invites organisations & individuals to decorate a shoebox & fill it with a prescribed list of gifts for needy children. Items include school stationary, toothbrush/toothpaste, facecloth & soap, clothing, toys & sweets. The cost of these items is an average of R350 per child.
Marion commented: “The severity of the Knysna fires has resulted in widespread loss of property & income, particularly amongst our already disadvantaged communities. This means that there are many more children in need of a little cheer this Christmas.
“Providing Chrismas gifts for youngsters resonates strongly amongst our lady members – especially those with grandchildren & even great- grandchildren!”
The first collection was made after prize giving at last Thursday’s monthly medal, yielding a fantastic R1,140. Each time a member makes a contribution, their name is entered into a lucky draw, with the winner receiving a ‘grown up’ Santa Shoebox, filled with goodies donated by Bev & Marion.
The ladies will continue weekly collections (including at the October mixed competition) for the next month or so, then Bev & Marion will purchase the required items by the closing date at the end of October. They hope that at least 10 shoeboxes can be donated by Knysna Golf Club. Gentleman members are of, course, encouraged to donate as well!
