Welcome to your news update. As Tina White has now finished her term as the Ladies’ Secretary, I (Marion McIlvenna) was asked to take over the compilation of the newsletter, not as Secretary but in an ex-officio capacity.  This I’m very happy to do.

Wet ,wet, wet

So, winter has finally arrived – and with it a useful amount of rain…at last! Shame it washed out the ladies’ comp on Thursday but I guess it’s a small price to pay for some relief from the prolonged drought. It’ll be good for the golf course and us players, especially those of us who’ve forgotten what it’s like to play on grass!

If we are to believe the weather forecast (always to be taken with a pinch of salt as far as Knysna is concerned) we’re likely to see the same scenario in the middle of this week as well.  We’ll see.

Ladies’ AGM

It has to be said that there was a rather poor turnout on 7th August, especially in the light of the fact that, with over 200 members, we have one of the largest ladies’ sections in the country.  However, there were some interesting discussions about how to attract more (especially younger) ladies to the club. Suggestions included arranging beginners’ group lessons through Scratch Golf & the resurrection of the Bunnies section.

Everyone acknowledges the fact that a lack of younger players is not unique to Knysna or restricted to women  – it’s a universal problem. Time, family & business commitments & financial constraints all play their part. However, ideas will be discussed & plans put forward by the Committee.

Apart from Tina White* relinquishing her position as Secretary, there are no changes to the Committee. They are:

Lady President: Barbara Bevan
Lady Captain: Sunet Venter
Vice Captain: Wendy du Toit
Treasurer: Tanya Lightly
Members: Sam Bruce & Judith Flevill

* The position of Secretary will remain unfilled for the time being. Any volunteers?

Trophy presentations made at the AGM were as follows:

TROPHY WINNERS 2017 (Excluding Club Champs and Zoe Marr Trophy)

Eclectic winner Silver: KJ Nicholson
Eclectic winner Bronze: Marion McIlvenna
Peggy Condon Trophy: Mavis Halliday
Best League Player Silver: Delene Weir
Best League Player Bronze: Barbara Bevan
Most improved Players: Sam Bruce and Lizzie Lightley (6 shots)
SALGU Medal winner Silver: Tanya Lightley
SALGU Medal winner Bronze: Mavis Halliday

NB. The Championship Matchplay competition was not completed, due to the number of entrants unable to arrange their games in time. The competition’s future is to be reconsidered in Committee.

Seniors take note…

Following a question raised about reduced club subs at the AGM, senior ladies are reminded of the following:

If you are 65 years old and have been a member for 20 years, or are 70 years or over and a member for 10 years, you are entitled to apply for a 50% reduction in Club subscriptions. If you qualify, please contact Runelle straight away!

Phoenix Golf Day

Many thanks to all the ladies who supported this fantastic fund-raising event for the Southern Cape Fire Protection Association on July 29th. No less than 154 players enjoyed the day, the refreshments afterwards – and the auction. Over R300,000 has been raised for this very worthy cause. Fabulous! (Lord knows, Knysna can use all the fire protection it can get after the events of June 7th.)

One of the day’s highlights was a hole-in-one on the 8th scored by our Lady Captain. Well done Sunet, you made us proud!

Just a thought…

I was amused to see that the theme for this year’s Ladies Open Weekend at St Francis in November is: Aloha from Hawaii.  Perhaps a few competitors will go there hoping to get ‘leid’?!

Dread to think what some of the outfits might be like…but I see that coconuts are cheap at Food Lovers Market at the moment. So get cracking & hollow them out for an attractive, if rather uncomfortable, Hawaiian bra top!
Please feel free to contact any one of your Committee members should you wish to address an issue, put forward an idea or even…a compliment. Any suggestions as to what should be included in this newsletter are welcomed.
